I get asked daily what Supplements we have Wyatt on and have spent hours on the phone with other mamas who are just beginning on their Autism journey. As a result, I decided to do a video about what supplements we have Wyatt on.
He was diagnosed at 16 months and has just turned 6 and our supplement journey has been a long, complicated road. Every child with Autism is different and therefore every child will need different supplements. After years of trying different ones and thru the guidance of our DAN doctor, we have found a combination that is working for Wyatt.
Let me first say that I am not a doctor. I am just a mama bear who does countless hours of research to help my son in anyway I can. We have spent thousands of dollars on different supplements and many of them have not worked. We finally found a combination of supplements that are working for Wyatt and he has just graduated from Special Ed and going to mainstream in first grade next year. YAHOO
The hard part for parents is most doctors don’t believe they will help our kids and advise against it. You end up joining every Facebook group and blog to find out what other parents are trying. You try every supplement and there are a lot of times, we see no benefit. Hence me putting together this video below. I will show you what we are using and what it is for, i.e. anxiety, sleep, OCD.

It seems our sleeping issue have regressed and we all are exhausted. This is our current sleeping situation:
Wyatt is 5 1/2 years old and we are currently using 5 mg Melatonin ER and Lavender Oil in a diffuser and also rubbing it own the bottom of his feet before bed. This was working for a few months, however he is back to not being able to fall asleep until 11-12 pm and waking up in the middle of the night as well as the first one up. This is not enough sleep for him and causing an increase in bad behaviors during the day and at school. This is not enough sleep for his parents as well and bad behaviors have been know to occur. 😉
Recently he has become anxious when going to bed and wants the bed completely covered with blankets as well as many lights on as he can negotiate with his parents. Cullen put up Christmas Lights around his bed to help but he still insists at least one light on or he becomes very anxious. To make matters worse, if there are any holes showing where the blankets overlap, then he can’t sleep and we have to fix the holes. This can happen 4-5 times a night.
We made an appointment with a natural doctor to help get him on some supplements in order to avoid putting a 5 year old on prescription sleeping pills. She was a breathe of fresh air and recommended the following supplements:
- Liquid Calcium Magnesium (helps calm mind and body)
- Cortisol Manager (helps stop mind racing)
- Inositol Powder (helps anxiety and OCD behaviors)
Initially, Wyatt had some stomach issues as a result from the Magnesium and we have since stopped the Magnesium and are working on some of Wyatt’s gut issues that are often associated with Autism. However, we are happy to report that after 5 days on the new Supplements, Wyatt is asleep by 9-930 pm and isn’t waking up in the middle of the night. 🙂

For those of you who know about our struggle having Wyatt sleep thru the night, I am ecstatic to report that he has slept thru the night two nights in a row! WooHoo!
For those who are new to our story, Wyatt doesn’t sleep well at night. He wakes up 4-6 times a night. I think it was his way to pay us back for all the times we told him he couldn’t do something he wanted to do. LOL I work full time so this was a huge challenge and quite frankly not working out well for my husband and I. I posted about our struggle on Facebook and had a lot of great ideas from friends. I researched everything and bought every product that might help him sleep, we were desperate.
He has been on Melatonin for 2 years and it works in the beginning and the effect slowly wears off. The problem with Melatonin is that it will put you to sleep, however it doesn’t keep you asleep. Our doctor recommended we put him on Melatonin ER (extended release) which is supposed to keep him asleep. It worked great the first night, however hasn’t worked well since.
I have heard a lot about Essential Oils, however I honestly didn’t think they would work and it was a waste of money. I am happy to report I was wrong! A friend recommended Lavender Oil and told me to rub on the bottom of his feet and also to put in a diffuser in his room. I have done both the last two nights and he has slept thru the night!
Through out our Autism journey we have had to try different supplements, therapies, medicines and now oils to see what will help Wyatt. If one doesn’t work, try the next one. This can get very expensive and can feel frustrating at times. So when you find something that works and helps your child, it is very rewarding. It solidifies they fact that all the time and energy you are putting into helping your child is worth it.
When Wyatt was first diagnosed with Autism, I did a lot of research on vitamin supplements. The results that parents and doctors found made me interested enough to try. Anything that might help offset behaviors was worth it to me. After extensive research, here are the vitamins that I would recommend. Please only try one vitamin at a time to make sure your little one can tolerate and that it has a positive affect. For example, Wyatt could tolerate small does of B12 but when we switched to B12 injections, he became very angry and we stopped immediately. What vitamins have you tried or do you recommend?
1) Super Nu Thera by Kirkman Labs (Multivitamin) http://www.amazon.com/Kirkman-Super-Nu-Thera-…/…/ref=sr_1_1… follow directions
2) B12 with 5000 mcg Methylcobalamin http://www.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Methylc…/…/ref=sr_1_2…
If he shows improvement on this she should get B12 injections. Follow directions. There are liquid forms if he won’t chew.
3) Children’s fish oil http://www.amazon.com/Carlson-Kids-Finest-Ora…/…/ref=sr_1_4… follow directions
4) If he has trouble sleeping you can give him 1 teaspoon of Melatonin http://www.amazon.com/Natrol-Melatonin-2-5mg-…/…/ref=sr_1_1… 1 teaspoon in water or juice
5) If he has any digestive issues use this probiotic. http://www.amazon.com/Culturelle-Digestive-He…/…/ref=sr_1_5… 1 capsule in water or juice
